Abstract
The supply of wheat as the main food of the people in many countries has always been the focus of policymakers. Therefore, over time, various policies have been adopted to supply wheat in different countries, among which we can mention the facilitation of wheat import. This research evaluated the impact of political stability on wheat imports in Persian Gulf countries. For this purpose, the quantile panel regression approach and statistical data related to the components of wheat import in Iran and five selected countries of the Persian Gulf from 2010 to 2021 were used. The results showed that an increase in political stability leads to an increase in wheat imports in the Persian Gulf countries; in such a way, the effect of political stability on wheat imports in countries with more political stability such as Saudi Arabia and Kuwait is generally greater than in countries with less political stability such as Iran. On the other, population growth has a positive effect on wheat imports in the Persian Gulf countries; in such a way that this effect is relatively greater in the countries of Iran, Iraq and Oman, which have larger populations, than in others. Finally, considering the potential threats to domestic wheat production in Iran and other Persian Gulf countries, the strategy of promoting political stability through further strengthening international relations and promoting regional cooperation in foreign food trade was emphasized as the key strategy reviewed in this research.
